One of the most honest types of photography is street photography.  It's a collection of candid pictures of people in public places.  Street photography was done everywhere, but now it's done in malls, clubs, streets, parks and pretty much anywhere.  A street photographer never asks anyone to pose, and he or she does not want anyone to act as if he or she knows what might happen next. This goes against the idea of street photography being a natural process.

Street photography comes from another type of photography called documentary photography.  Documentary photography is said to be the most honest and true-to-life type of photography.  There are professional and amateur brands of documentary photography, as well as street photography.  Street photography shows what society is like in its natural state. This explains a lot of the photos and videos we see online and on TV that show what was going on back then.

 Black-and-white film is used to take pictures of this type.  Street photography often shows irony in situations.  Many street photographers use wide-angle lenses to capture more of their surroundings.  The images usually look like a screen or window showing what a person looks like at a particular moment.  The photographer stays away from the scene.  This type of photography captures real life.

Some photographers who specialise in street photography take their cameras to public events like conventions, meetings and tragic sites.  Others just take photos of what's around them.  A famous street photographer named Garry Winogrand was well known for taking photos of everyday life in New York for many years.  He was interested in talking about the modern social issues of his time.  He became well-known after the 1960s.  He took about one hundred photographs a day for about thirty years, and left over three hundred thousand photographs that had not been edited yet.

One interesting thing about street photography is that sometimes a photographer might capture things on film that they were not even focusing on.  People often miss strange and funny things happening in their photos.  When they look more closely at the film afterwards, they often find things in it that are ironic, interesting, or funny.  Often, things that are in the background of a photo don't seem important, but because of this, we can say that street photography is a way of capturing the moment.

Street photography started in the late 19th century and was popular between the mid and late 1970s.  One of the inventions that helped make this type of photography possible was 35-millimetre film.  Thirty-five millimetre film was invented in the late 1800s.  Photographers from Europe and North America made it popular and developed the art behind it.  Two photographers were involved in the early development: Henri Cartier-Bresson from France and Robert Frank from Switzerland.

You don't have to be a professional to take street photos.  You don't have to use black and white film.  All you need is a way to take pictures.  You can make your own documentary film series.  The photos you take can speak about what society is like.  Your photographs can capture people doing everyday things like eating or sleeping.  But remember, you should not publish pictures of people without their permission.
