There are many places to learn photography, but which one is right for you?  Sure, there are online schools and courses, but they won't give you the hands-on information you need.  You need other students and the teacher's eye to become a better photographer.  The online classes do have their uses, for example to give you the basic information to study.  Choosing the right school can be difficult.  Some require a recommendation, while others are separate from colleges.

The information you want to get from a photography course will be part of the decision for you.  For example, a college that does not specialise in photography will offer the basics, but may not offer you an internship with a professional photographer in your field.  If you want to take up photography as a hobby, these basic courses will often give you the information you need to produce images you can be proud of.

Specialist schools, like any other, will allow you to learn more about a particular subject.  Most specialised schools will allow you to work with a professional to learn the ins and outs of your profession and expand your knowledge. This will help you learn faster and learn more about the techniques used in photography while gaining hands-on experience.

The best way to choose a photography school is to decide what you want from your photography.  Once you have decided, you can move on to finding out how to apply.  Some photography schools are part of a studio and allow anyone to sign up for a course.  Other schools require you to attend a college or university to learn the basics of photography and do an internship before going on to the specialist school.

Searching online will lead you to the schools available in your area and across the country.  You will be able to find the application form as well as descriptions of each course they offer.  The websites will also list the qualifications you need to attend the school and the classes you need to take to become a photographer. Although the experience you get in a classroom is better, online classes will teach you what you need to know.

Some classes you will need to take are in lighting, composition and other basics.  Depending on your field, you will then need to branch out and learn how to capture the subject.  For example, in portrait photography you will need to understand angles, light, balance and how to get the reactions you need from your subject.  Digital photography is the new way of taking pictures and there are some different techniques to learn from the older manual cameras.

Photography schools can help you to become more comfortable with photography.  You may decide that you need a little help to move from the point and shoot type to a more complicated camera, or you may decide that there is a career for you.  There are many types of schools out there and online sources will help you find them.  Online photography classes can help you learn techniques, but you will still want other people to help you find your eye for art.  If you have worked with manual cameras in the past, you will probably want to take a digital photography course when you make the switch.
